PRIMARY & SECONDARY COLOURS IN MIRO'S PAINTINGS

In previous sessions we have learned the relationship between Miró and colours. At the beginning, Miró used a very wide range of colours. As time went by, however, his palette was reduced to primary and secondary colours and black and white. His colours were generally flat, without shading. We have found out what the primary colours are and how to create the secondary colours.
The primary colours cannot be made from other colours.  Artists create all the other colors by mixing together the primary colors. These are:
  • Red
  • Yellow
  • Blue
In the following image you can check how Miró used the primary colours in one of his works:

The secondary colours are:
  • Orange
  • Green
  • Purple
Here you have another painting in which Miró used mainly secondary colours:

The secondary colours are made by mixing two primary colors.  Each secondary colour is made from two primary colors :
  • Red + Yellow = Orange
  • Yellow + Blue = Green
  • Red + Blue = Purple
If you click HERE you will watch and listen a song that will help you to learn better the primary and the formation of the secondary colours.

Finally, watch the following video about the Miró's painting called The Garden while you pay much attention to the colours since, afterwards, you will need to paint a sheet following the same chromatic design.

It is your turn! Download, print out this BLACK AND WHITE WORKSHEET  and paint it following the same colour pattern as in the video. Enjoy it!
